Module 1
Our Module 1 training area is set up to the same dimensions you will encounter on the test so its as realistic as possible.
IN THIS SESSION WE COVER:
- The differences between smaller and larger motorcycles
- How those differences will effect you and what to expect when riding the larger machine
- The Module 1 test in detail
- A general warm up on the larger machine
- Demonstration of all the manoeuvres
- Slow speed manoeuvre practice
- High speed manoeuvre practice
The test in detail…
Upon arrival your instructor will show you where to park, you will then meet your examiner. He will check all your documentation, you can’t test without it, so don’t forget it!
The examiner will explain each exercise individually so you don’t have to preform it from memory!
The three basics!
- The test is conducted as if you are on the road, so remember your observations
- Hitting or knocking over a cone is classed as a serious fault
- Putting your foot down on an exercise is a serious fault.
The examiner will tell you to treat it the off road area like a public highway (meaning observations!) and ride into one of the two green boxes. Your test starts when you get on the bike and ride into the testing area.
Manual handling
When riding towards the green boxes (cones) we recommend parking into the box on the right. This will make the exercise easier. The examiner will tell you to get off the bike and then push the bike into the other bay, simulating pushing your bike out of a garage or parking space.
There is no particular right or wrong way to preform this exercise so your instructor will make sure you find the easiest way that’s right for you.
Slalom and figure of 8
Both exercises run as one, no stopping in between. You will ride from the manual handling box after doing your observations. Between the first two yellow cones and ride between each further set of cones including the 2 blue cones at the end. You then figure 8 round the blue cones 2 or 3 times until the examiner raises his hand and indicates to pull up.
Common faults:
- Hitting one or more cones
- Not moving your head around on the Fig 8
- Putting one or both feet down whilst riding
- Losing control of steering and clutch causing the bike to run wide
Slow Ride
Riding in a straight line roughly 20 metres under slow speed control roughly 5mph.
Common faults:
- Going too fast
- Stalling the bike
- Not moving in a reasonably straight line
U-turn
Preform a U-turn within the white lines. Observations when you set off and before changing direction (just before the turn) then come to a controlled stop.
Common faults:
- Riding on or over the painted lines
- Not making appropriate observations before moving or changing direction
- Foot down
Circuit and Controlled Stop
You will be asked to ride a circuit through the turn at approx 19mph, between the blue and red cones, exit through the speed trap and stop your bike with the front wheel inside the blue box of 4 cones. There is no minimum speed for this exercise. You are demonstrating you can pull up to a junction correctly whilst using the breaks correctly.
Common faults:
- Stopping before or beyond the blue box
- Hitting a cone in the turn
Circuit and Emergency Stop
Again 19mph is expected through the turn but for this exercise and for the Avoidance after it you will need to reach 50kph, roughly 32mph as you go through the speed trap. 48kph and 49kph are still test passes but you will get a rider fault for not reaching the ideal speed. If you get below 48kph you given another chance to reach the minimum speed and perform the exercise providing you preformed the exercise safely and correctly.
Common faults:
- Failing to reach the minimum speed requirement (twice)
- Late reaction to examiner when he raises his hand
- Losing control of the bike under braking
- Locking a wheel and skidding
- Not shutting off the throttle
- Clutch in too early
- Not performing an effective emergency stop
- Going way too quick for the exercise
Circuit and Hazard Avoidance
After riding through the speed trap at 50kph (32mph) you then ride between the two blue off set cones, bringing your bike back in line to then come to a controlled (not emergency) stop with the blue cones at the end.
Common faults:
- Hitting the blue cone
- Failing to reach the minimum speed requirement
- Not stopping back in line with the blue cones.
After this last exercise you will be asked to ride out of the testing area and park up. Your test is now finished.
