Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) – From £140

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the first step to legally ride on the road and is usually completed in a day, on completion you will be issued with a certificate (DL196) and be entitled to ride with L plates for 2 years, up to a 125cc (age pending) before it must be retaken.

Although passing your Theory test for a CBT is not a requirement a good understanding of the Highway Code is required to make sure you’re taken on the road and get your certificate as quickly as possible.

The CBT

Compulsory Basic Training or CBT was introduced in 1990, it was designed to reduce the amount of road traffic accidents by providing riders with essential insight, knowledge and basic riding skills to keep them safe on the road. Although the CBT is not a pass or fail course it is not always completed within one day.

The CBT is classed as a riders first step in achieving their Full Licence. When successful you will be issued with your CBT certificate (DL196) which is valid for 2 years.

At the beginning of the day your Instructor will check your licence and eye sight and provide you with any safety equipment you may need.

The CBT is made up of 5 Elements:

Element A

The aims of the CBT

Its 5 elements explained and what is expected of you to progress throughout the day. Your Instructor will then cover suitable safety equipment, the legal requirements of helmets and answer any questions you may have.

Element B

Introduction to the machine

This element ensures you are aware of how the bike operates and if the machine is safe and legal to ride. We introduce the controls, use of the stands, basic daily and weekly checks, start/stopping the machine and being able to safely wheel the bike and bring it to a stop

Element C

On site Practical Training

Your Instructor will explain, demonstrate and teach everything you need to know for each exercise building from basic pull away and stops to gear changing if required, Slow machine control, Figure of 8’s, U-Turns, Emergency stops and finally Junction simulations.

Element D

On road training preparation

In the classroom we will cover core elements of riding safety such as: how to determine the correct speed to travel in different situations, positioning, following distances, the importance of knowing the highways code, what makes motorcyclists more vulnerable, forward planning and your legal requirements.

Element E

Practical on road riding

Your Instructor will brief you on the radio procedures and communication. The On Road training will last a minimum of two hours with a maximum of two students to one Instructor. At the beginning of the ride we expect you to make mistakes and your Instructor will be hands on in offering instruction and advice to fix any issues, however for at least the last 30 minutes you will need to consistently demonstrate you have learned and have corrected your riding.

It’s a packed day but we will do our best to make it as rewarding and enjoyable as possible!
